    Job Hunting in Academia (9/29/2004)

Elizabeth Fleer (not her real name), a Ph.D. in oceanography, and Scott Gac, a Ph.D. in American history, are both documenting their searches for tenure-track jobs this academic year in the Chronicle of Higher Education. In their first articles, both Elizabeth and Scott talk about the conflict between their job hunts and the professional aspirations of their significant others.

Meeting Up with Fellow Librarians (9/14/2004)

Meetup.com lists 41 librarian groups worldwide. It's a great idea for librarians who otherwise would not get to meet and exchange ideas with colleagues, but I prefer to select from the dozens of professional organizations that already exist. Most offer lots of opportunities to participate and charge fairly low fees in exchange for their publications and other services.

Librarians in Ohio Working 24/7 (9/08/2004)

Ohio State Library launched its 24/7 virtual reference service yesterday, three years after the Library of Congress along with 100 or so other libraries around the world first made this service available in 2001 (Chronicle of Higher Ed.) Other states currently offering 24/7 online reference include California, Delaware, Maryland, Idaho, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Wisconsin.

In related news, last month MCLS and OCLC joined forces to combine 24/7 Reference and Question Point, the two preeminent online reference software packages. MCLS's 24/7 Reference software is used by over 500 libraries, including universities such as Yale, the Claremont Colleges, and the California State University, as well as public libraries nationwide, including the states mentioned above. OCLC's Question Point is used in 1,000 libraries in 20 countries.

    Get MP3s @ Your Library (9/01/2004)

About 100 library systems around the country are testing out a new service: downloading MP3 audio books to either a patron's own MP3 player or a library-owned player that can then be checked out. Ever looking forward, Public Library Association president Clara Bohrer predicts that as more patrons get their own MP3 players, libraries will eventually phase out the players and focus solely on digital content.

    Wireless Brings New Conundrum (9/01/2004)

If a library's wireless signal is strong enough to be used outside the building, should people be allowed to use it? This discussion on Slashdot has readers citing the ALA's policy on Access to Electronic Information, Services, and Networks.
