Part of Google Print, the pilot project will make 40,000 of the university's library books searchable online and could lead to the digitization of all 15 million books in Harvard's collections. Works in the public domain will be available wholly online. Copyrighted works will only be excerpted. Read more.

Artifacts Missing from National Archives (12/07/2004)

Hundreds of letters and photographs are missing from the National Archives. Items include color photographs of Nancy Reagan and the king and queen of Jordan, letters from Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The agency is keeping its eye on Internet auction to locate suspected stolen items.

Gay Book Ban Goal of State Lawmaker (12/02/2004)

Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, has introduced a bill that would prohibit the use of Alabama state funds for "the purchase of textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." Works that would be banned include Heather has Two Mommies along with classics such as The Color Purple, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Brideshead Revisted, and the Tennessee Williams play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
