    Beta Phi Mu (5/31/2005)

Founded in 1948 to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students, this fraternity grants membership, including the privileges of voting, holding office, and chapter affiliation, to candidates at any college or university where the American Library Association has accredited a professional degree program, who also fulfill certain requirements, including recommendation by their faculty. Total eligible candidates comprise no more than 25 percent of a graduating class.

Publishers concerned about electronic reserves (5/19/2005)

Under fair use, university libraries have long allowed students to make copies of copyrighted materials, but publishers see electronic reserves as akin to course packs, which require permission and allow them to collect royalties. The Association of American Publishers has already contacted UC San Diego, claiming rights infringement.

Couple donates wedding gifts to library (5/17/2005)

In lieu of a traditional wedding registry, Laura Offerdahl and Pat Harris created a wishlist of books, CDs, and DVDs to donate to the St. Paul Public Library. The list of 100+ items includes a CD boxed set commemorating the Minnesota Orchestra's Centennial ($195) and an audio version of the Bible ($3,914.40). "People are always surprised when they see how expensive things are that the library has to buy," says Peter Pearson, president of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library.

The stage set of The People's Temple, a play about the 1978 Jonestown massacre, is an archive, complete with movable shelving, hundreds of document storage boxes, book trucks, and a reference desk.

UT Austin moves 90,000 books out of undergraduate library (5/16/2005)

The move will create 6,000 sq. feet of space for a 24-hour information commons, a writing instruction center, and facilities for computer training and technical assistance. Basic reference books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries will remain, but many texts will be available via digital collections. (The story is mirrored here.)

University of Cailfornia cancelling print subscriptions (5/06/2005)

In the midst of a budget crisis, libraries of the University of California are eliminating subscriptions to print publications wherever they have licensed access to an electronic equivalent. At UCLA, 540 publications will be eliminated. Collections affected include the biomedical library, the management library, the Charles E. Young Research Library, and the science & engineering library.
