College professors share Big Ideas, win money (2/28/2006)

Affectionately known as Professor Idol, Canadian educational television network TVOntario's show Big Ideas is entering its 5th season, pitting professors against each other for the prize of $10,000 (awarded to their institution) and the title of Ontario's Best Lecturer.

In Australia, new nationwide library service sends books via mail, email (2/26/2006)

Over 400 million items from 800 libraries across the country can now be requested via the National Library of Australia's website. Items include books, journals, newspapers, magazines, pictures, and manuscripts. Books can be sent by mail to borrowers. Alternately, pages can be photocopied for $13 per 50 pages, or up to 10% of any published work as permitted by copyright law.

    Speed-dating in the library (2/23/2006)

Belgian librarians Danny Theuwis and Eric Van der Straeten of the Leuven Public Library are training fellow librarians to host "bib-dating" events. In round 1, participants answer a question such as "What is your favorite book?" and then mingle for 10 minutes. In round 2, participants share opinions about books and switch partners every few minutes.

Librarians more stressed out than doctors and fire fighters? (2/22/2006)

A study presented at the British Psychological Society by consultant Saqib Saddiq claims that librarians find their work more stressful than emergency workers. Theories abound about how he reached those results. Head of libraries of the Glasgow City Council Karen Cunningham said she loved her job and found Mr. Saddiq's claims bizarre, and she's not alone. One piece of advice I saw on a mailing list was, "If you are in one of those libraries described in the article, get out! And quickly!"

ADDED (2/23/06): Another librarian emailed SHL, the firm sponsoring the research, and got the following reply from Lesley Kirby, Product Design Consultant: "The research collected data from 44 librarians working in public libraries. The authors are aware that there are many different types of library (sic)...we did not set out to attract, nor did we claim, a representative sample that encompassed these different types of librarian."

Bush budget proposes to close EPA library (2/14/2006)

If President Bush's budget passes, $2 million will be cut from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's library budget, which will shut down its 27 libraries that serve EPA scientists and the public. More about the impact of the cuts, specifically on services and staff/budget affected.

New ETS exam measures information literacy (2/13/2006)

My university is trying the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Assessment on a pilot basis.

Book Overdue for 61 Years (2/10/2006)

Marie Sushames was recently presented a $6,114 overdue bill on her 85th birthday for checking out The Punch Library of Humour from the Rotorua Public Library in New Zealand in 1945. Library manager Jane Gilbert said she would be happy to waive the charges.
