    The Library of Yesteryear (9/21/2006)

The Irascible Professor aims its latest criticism at modern libraries, which did not go unanswered by the blog of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

I'm more concerned, however, by the charges of politically correct revisionism. Nancy Drew is one of those characters that have been revisited several times over the years, but I think it is more out of affection than censorship that her look or her car keep getting updated for new generations of readers.

Would guest commentator Jane Goodwin count The True Story of the Three Little Pigs or the Stinky Cheeseman as politically correct revisionist works?

Baidu beats Google as China's search engine of choice (9/19/2006)

Also interesting is that Baidu founder Robin Li studied library science as an undergraduate.

    Youtube.edu (9/19/2006)

YouTube launched a news service at the end of August aimed at college students and faculty. Videos uploaded can only be viewed by others with .edu emails.

Rice to publish first all-digital academic press (9/15/2006)

The university plans to use Connexions to publish e-books with text and images as well as audio, animations, and hyperlinks. Cost will be 1/10 of traditional publishing.

Librarians in flood plains: Don't use the lower shelves (9/13/2006)

Tulane and other universities are suing for flood coverage after Katrina, which the insurers claimed was never covered in their policy. Meanwhile, Tulane's dean of the library, Lance Query, says that from now on, all books will kept be on shelves "two feet above flood stage and then a foot on top of that to clear the wake of the boat."

    Facebook opens up (9/13/2006)

You no longer have to be affiliated with a university or recognized company to sign up. Now all you have to do is live in one of 500 geographic regions.

Natalie Portman to portray Anne Boleyn on big screen (9/08/2006)

Portman will play the controversial mistress/wife of King Henry VIII in the film adaptation of Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl, to be released in 2007.

NYT to present first Academic Librarian Awards (9/07/2006)

Nominations are being accepted until October 20, 2006. Eligible nominees include any librarian with a Master’s degree in library science who is currently working in a college or university library in the United States.

Google offers free book downloads (9/01/2006)

Via library partners, such as NYPL, Harvard, and University of California. Only of works out of copyright, of course, but as PDFs, which do a pretty good job of simulating the printed page.
