Time magazine article from March '06 about the way kids today multi-task, e.g. instant messaging and listening to music while doing homework. I remember reading similar articles about Gen Y, Gen X, and even the Baby Boomers. Conclusion: multitasking is inefficient, but it's part of our culture. We knew that.
According to the National Survey of Student Engagement, distance education students and adult learners often participate in as many educational activities as traditional students do, but part-time students were likely to do so. Engagement is measured via factors such as level of academic challenge, active/collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment.
The author made this video for a project that required shooting "something to do with intervals in the library. [She] chose the moving stacks in the basement . . . It was sort of a 'What happens after hours' type of thing..." Brilliant.
