New search engine searches for video hosted elsewhere (2/26/2007)

Instead of competing with Youtube, Google Video and others to host videos, Blinkx is happy just to help you search it.

Newbery award winning book shunned by middle school librarians due to s-word (2/21/2007)

In the opening page of The Higher Power of Lucky, a dog gets bitten in the scrotum. Once you get beyond that, you get to meet 10-year-old Lucky Trimble, who loses her mother in an accident and searches for a higher power to figure out her life.

Like all encyclopedias, Wikipedia is just a starting point (2/14/2007)

Middlebury College's History Department is doing what a lot of university faculty want to do; they are banning Wikipedia as a source that can be cited in papers. "Wikipedia is not an acceptable citation, even though it may lead one to a citable source." Well said.

    College Presidents: 1986 and 2006 (2/12/2007)

Interesting profile done by the American Council on Education every few years. Stats are compiled for All institutions and also separated by public vs. private.

    Teachers in the movies (2/08/2007)

The last important issue for people who go to the movies, and think they understand what it's like to be a teacher, is the reality of time management . . . In the films, teachers are either single or have sacrificed their personal lives to be there for the kids. Husbands and wives of these dedicated people do not want to hear about students all the time, or give up week nights to a spouse correcting or planning -- for the kids . . . Swank's husband [in Freedom Writers], says something like, 'This isn't what I signed on for. I just don't care about people as much as you do."

New movie starring Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen (2/08/2007)

    Let the Austen revival begin!
