    The Postmodern snack cake (5/29/2007)

I enjoyed reading this interview with Steve Ettlinger, author of Twinkie, Deconstructed. Look for the anecdote involving the food flavorist.

Top 100 searches on Google, updated constantly (5/22/2007)

Here's the press release that explains it and a news article that explains it even better.

    Open access peer-reviewed wikis (5/09/2007)

Within the same week I learned about both the Encyclopedia of Earth and the Encyclopedia of Life. Exciting!

Privatization blocks access to Los Alamos lab (5/09/2007)

A Harvard grad student researching the history of nuclear secrecy was denied access to the archives and was told by the private contractor operating the lab to seek access via the FOIA, which hinders serendipitous research because it requires the individual to specify records to be released.

Podcasting and audio books: fair use or not? (5/04/2007)

The "Carrie on Copyright" column in School Library Journal always has practical advice on copyright issues in education. This one concerns legally sharing podcasts and audio books, both pre-recorded and self-recorded.

Female protagonists underrepresented in picture books (5/04/2007)

Of popular titles published mainly between 1995 and 2001, 95 had male leads and 52 had female leads. Also, "[w]omen were... typically portrayed as 'nurturers' who often had no occupations. And if they did work outside the home, they generally held gender-stereotyped jobs such as a secretary."

Biofeedback toys can teach people how to concentrate (5/02/2007)

Target markets include gamers, children with ADHD, the mentally or physically disabled, and adults who want to improve their focus and memory.
