    Meebo Firefox Add-on (1/24/2008)

If you've seen me online more often lately, it's thanks in large part to this neat gizmo.

    ARTstor is on Facebook (1/18/2008)

Not much there yet. I'm waiting to see if they add anything interesting.

Library of Congress publishes ~3000 pictures on Flickr (1/17/2008)

Included are photos taken during the Great Depression for which no copyright restrictions are known to exist. Many have missing information, such as where they were taken and who is pictured. Viewers are invited to help tag the photos. (Via Computerworld.com.)

    Library Outreach via Facebook? (1/14/2008)

Librarians at the University of Michigan recently conducted a survey on how users view their website and online tools. Of 330 respondents, 62% were undergraduate or graduate students. In response to the question, "[i]f you could contact a librarian via Facebook or MySpace for help with your research, would you?" an overall 23% answered yes or maybe. Curiously, graduate/Ph.D. students had a lower than average percentage of 20% whereas undergraduates had a higher than average percentage of 34%. (Via Gerry McKiernan.)

January is Jane Austen month at Kansas City Public Library (1/08/2008)

And they're blogging about it all month long! :)

Educators using comics to engage learners (1/04/2008)

Proponents say comics can make reading less intimidating for those who are struggling. Working with Diamond Comic Distributors and Disney Publishing Worldwide, a pilot program in Maryland has received positive feedback from teachers and students.

    WorldCat Facebook App (1/03/2008)

If you're in Facebook, try this app to search for books in libraries near you.

(Caveat emptor! WorldCat does not search every library! For example, here in Southern California, it does not search the Los Angeles County library system.)

EDIT (1/23/08): My bad, WorldCAT does search the Los Angeles County library system, but it doesn't list each library separately, so if you don't live near Downey, you probably won't see LA County listed in the first page of your results.

AAAS reverses decision, keeps Science in JSTOR (1/03/2008)

Read about the earlier decision here.

Author of Stinky Cheese Man becomes first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature (1/03/2008)

The two-year position was modeled after the UK's Children's Laureate. Author Jon Scieszka was selected by a five-person committee of children's book experts, plus John Cole, director of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, and Robin Adelson, executive director of the Children's Book Council.

This is the most useful comment about the Amazon Kindle I've read so far (1/02/2008)

"I've read a bunch of complaints . . . about the fact that blogs cost money on Amazon's Kindle. For some reason, this seems to piss some people off -- if they're free on the web, they should be free everywhere, and Bezos is a money-grubbing bastard. Or something. Goes the argument. I imagine."

"To which I say: You're being silly." Read on!

    H.R. 2764 (1/02/2008)

President Bush signed H.R. 2764 on December 26, 2007. Among other things, this is the bill that mandates public access to all NIH funded projects no later than 12 months after publication. (See Sec. 218.)
